PAINTINGS FOR HORSES
New Works by Cindy Hinant and RJ Supa

This fall, artists Cindy Hinant and RJ Supa present Paintings for Horses, a collaborative outdoor
exhibition of new works installed on the side of a barn in rural New England adjacent to a horse
farm. Taking inspiration from the hand-painted barn advertisements that once dotted the
American landscape, Hinant and Supa reimagine the tradition with a twist—this time, the
paintings are not for passing motorists, but for the horses themselves.
Rendered entirely in hues of blue and yellow to accommodate their dichromatic vision , the
series depicts apples, watermelons, carrots, sugar cubes, and other equine delights. Suspended against the weathered boards of a working barn, the paintings transform an agricultural structure into an open-air gallery—one that blurs the line between pastoral utility and conceptual art.
“We wanted to make something beautiful and fun that plays with who art is for,” says Supa. “If
billboards sell to humans, these ones court the attention of horses.”
Hinant adds, “If art can bring calm to a single horse, imagine what it can do for the rest of us. I
think a world that gives beauty to horses would find itself incapable of cruelty.”
Paintings for Horses situates itself at the intersection of Pop, pastoral Americana, and site-
specific conceptual installation, continuing both artists’ shared interest in the intimacy of
everyday symbols and the subversion of display. Whether seen by equine audiences or human
passersby, the project invites reflection on desire, consumption, and communication across
species.
Additionally, an accompanying AI-Generated album, Songs About Paintings for Horses, will be
available for download throughout the run of the exhibition and will premiere during the opening
reception.
Cindy Hinant was born in Indianapolis, IN and lives and works in New York, NY.
She received a BFA from the Herron School of Art and Design and holds a MFA from the
School of Visual Arts. She has been the recipient of the Robert D. Beckman Jr. Emerging Artist
Fellowship, the Edward Albee Visual Artist-in-Residence Fellowship and the Sheffield
International Artist Book Prize. Her work has been exhibited at the Massachusetts Museum of
Contemporary Art, the Palais de Tokyo, Kunsthalle St. Gallen, the Egyptian Modern Art
Museum, and the Lenbachhaus Munich.
RJ Supa is a curator, artist and writer who has exhibited and performed internationally. His work has been seen at Marinaro Gallery, Salon 94, M&B Los Angeles, Jack Hanley Gallery, NADA House, the Kunsthalle in Baden-Baden, Germany and the Steirischer Herbst festival in Graz, Austria. He recently completed his first novel, I Am Trying To Break Your Heart, and is working on his second, Earl. He lives and works in the hill towns of the Berkshire Mountains, somewhere deep in Western Massachusetts.
